British bass Matthew Rose was a member of The Royal Opera’s Young Artist Programme 2003–05. He has since returned to sing roles including Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Polyphemus (Acis and Galatea), Colline (La bohème), Masetto (Don Giovanni, including on tour with The Royal Opera to Japan), Harašta (The Cunning Little Vixen), Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Timur (Turandot), Talbot (Maria Stuarda), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Baron Ochs (Der Rosenkavalier). In the 2018/19 Season he sings Pimen (Boris Godunov).
Rose was born in Brighton and trained at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Away from the Royal Opera appearances include Ashby (La fanciulla del West), Colline, Talbot, Oroveso (Norma), Leporello, Masetto (Don Giovanni) and Frère Laurent (Roméo et Juliette) for the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Bottom (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Collatinus (The Rape of Lucretia), Callistene (Poliuto) and Nick Shadow (The Rake’s Progress) for Glyndebourne Festival, Baron Ochs for Lyric Opera of Chicago, Bottom for La Scala, Milan, King Marke (Tristan und Isolde) and John Claggart (Billy Budd) for English National Opera, Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlo) and Leporello for Deutsche Oper Berlin, Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) for Garsington Opera and Walter (Guillaume Tell) at the BBC Proms.
Rose performs widely in concert, with conductors including Andrew Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Jurowski, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel Harding, Antonio Pappano, Robin Ticciati and Michael Tilson-Thomas. He is a keen recitalist who has recorded prolifically, including Winterreise with Gary Matthewman for Stone Records. Alongside his international career, he is Artistic Consultant to the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera, and an advisory member of the Mahler Foundation. During the 2017/18 season, Matthew Rose was an Artist in Residence at the National Opera Studio.
