Fifth Quadrant (5Q) music collective was created in 2009 by Simon Hewitt Jones (violinist), Drew Balch (violist) and Daniel Swain (pianist), and was immediately engaged as a string quartet consisting of Simon Hewitt Jones (Violin), Toby Tramaseur (Violin), Drew Balch (Viola) and Jonathan Bloxham (Cello) by Paul Robertson of the Medici Quartet, to take part in the premiere of Towards Silence. Since then, 5Q has embarked on an ambitious program to explore and help redefine the ‘Classical’ tradition of collaborative music-making, working with artists from inside and outside the world of music to juxtapose the traditional Classical repertoire with today’s contemporary compositions.
The group has appeared at many major festivals and concert series in the UK, USA and Europe, including Spitalfields, Aldeburgh, Serenata, Cheltenham, and Swaledale, as well as on BBC radio and television. Members of 5Q performed together on the 2010 recording ‘Imogen Holst: String Chamber Music’, which won a BBC Music Magazine award in 2010. The group has a longstanding commitment to music education projects in the Occupied Palestinian territories, and travels frequently to the region to perform concert tours, education workshops and masterclasses.
