  • Ruiz: Venus & Adonis

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
Venus & Adonis is the premiere recording of the eponymous song cycle by Billboard-charting composer Rodrigo Ruiz. Released to celebrate William Shakespeare’s 460th anniversary, this album is a tribute to the poet’s unmatched inspiration. When the composition was finished in 2020, Venus & Adonis became the first song cycle known to be written by a Mexican composer, as well as the only known song cycle (in English or otherwise) set entirely to Shakespeare's texts. Despite the newness of the cycle, the music lacks no lyricism and will gladden singers, pianists, artistic directors and all those longing to perform and programme such lyrical and well-crafted music. These seventeen songs, performed by British duo Grace Davidson (soprano) and George Herbert (piano), exemplify the enormous variety of expression that Ruiz is able to conjure in his writing, making of Venus & Adonis a truly exciting and refreshing addition to the art song tradition —one that will touch audiences and musicians alike. All Music Classical Highlights October 2024 "Especially priceless is this recording of Venus&Adonis by the Mexican composer Rodrigo Ruiz...[Davidson and Herbert] conjure up a suitably unsettling atmosphere true to the spirit of Ruiz's music...The songs are enchanting, the text clearly expressive, with soft melodic lines, with he loving piano of George Herbert, who offers a graceful accompaniment...Ruiz has the capacity to construct a musical narrative connected to the poetry, where everything flows: fire, passion, coldness, tenderness and turbulence. These are beautiful musical performances" - Sonograma Melómano de Oro (JANUARY 2025) "The compositional mastery of Ruiz makes every part fuse to perfection with the text, offering a memorable auditive experience...The interpretation of Grace Davidson brings delicacy and strength to each song, adapting her colour and vocal texture according to the demands of the work...This album reminds us of the potential to combine different artistic expressions" - Melómano

  • The Song of Songs, The Poet in Exile: Works by Walter Arlen

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
Arlen was a Jewish composer, originally from Austria who escaped Hitler’s invasion into Vienna. His family was persecuted, and lots of his family were murdered or committed suicide as a result of the holocaust, which inspired a lot of his compositional writing. When he escaped to the US where he lived with family friends, Arlen entered songs in a competition, winning first prize. This allowed him to live, study and work as amanuensis with Roy Harris. Through Harris he was introduced to famous composers of the day (such as Schoenberg, Mahler etc) and wrote for the Los Angeles Times as music reviewer for many years before committing to his own compositional works, both of whom have had additions made by conductor Kenneth Woods, with Arlen’s permission. "Really fine contributions from the three soloists...this is well worth investigating" - Gramophone "This is an inspired score, in which the three soloists give off an extraordinary aura: the sumptuous voice of Thomas Mole, the elegant voice of mezzo-soprano Anna Huntley and the fleshiness of tenor Gwilym Bowen's voice. At the head of the extraordinary English orchestra and the magnificent voices of the women in the chorus, there is Kenneth Woods, an erudite and affable conductor who creates welcoming sound environments - instrumental and vocal." - Sonograma "These profound poems are not easily rendered in musical terms, and it is to Arlen’s credit that he goes a considerable way to achieving this" - Acana

  • A Prayer for Deliverance

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
Mixing iconic choral works with music by some of today’s most exciting composers, this varied programme is centred around themes of rest. Joel Thompson’s virtuosic new work is a particular highlight: written in 15 parts, A Prayer for Deliverance perfectly showcases Tenebrae’s core values of passion and precision. The second half features Herbert Howells’ Requiem – surely one of the most moving works in the English choral repertoire. Associated with the untimely death of Howells’ young son Michael, the work remained unknown until it was finally published just three years before Howells’ own death in 1983. ★★★★★ - “This latest recording once again showcases his singer’s effortless versatility both as choristers and soloists, with a capella singing that is precise yet never precious, highly disciplined yet unaffected and warm” - BBC Music Magazine

“This is one of the best new choral discs that has come my way for quite some time.” - Music Week International

“The quality of the a cappella singing on this set by the renowned choir Tenebrae is truly superlative in all departments” - Cross Rhythms "In this recording, the voices of the Tenebrae choir offer more poignant interpretations, characterised by a reading marked by restraint, intensity and a deep respect for the text and music." - Sonograma

  • Fantasies (Cello Transcriptions)

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
The youngest musician ever to win the International Tchaikovsky Competition Cello Division, exciting American cellist Zlatomir Fung has collated an album of opera fantasies including Fantasy on Jenůfa which he arranged himself and a Fantasy writte especially for him - Fantasia Carmèn - by composer Marshall Estrin. After extensive research Fung found these fantasies for cello used recognizable tunes from famous operas to create a free medley and that there are few rules beyond the pure expression of the composer’s personality, interests, and strengths as a cellist. But it’s more unconventional elements reimagine the notion of the fantasy itself, proving that the genre’s possibilities are far from exhausted—and, indeed, may only be in their infancy. After his Tchaikovsky competition win, Fung has garnered accolades, critical acclaim and standing ovations at performances around the world, more and more widely recognized as one of the preeminent cellists of our time. Astounding audiences with his boundless virtuosity and exquisite sensitivity, the 25-year-old has already proven himself a star among the next generation of world-class musicians. ★★★★ - BBC Music Magazine ★★★★ - Limelight "The American cellist Zlatomir Fung has composed a fantasy  on Janacek’s opera Jenufa, a feat that defies credibility ... I can hardly believe that what they have done here is doable." - Norman Lebrecht/The Critic “Now, with the release of his debut solo album ‘fantasies’ on the signum records label, Fung takes another significant step in establishing his artistic voice” - Gramophone "You have to stop and concentrate for a moment to realise and appreciate the astonishing amount of work Fung is actually putting in here. The technical brilliance is worn very lightly, but boy is it there when you listen out for it."Prestomusic

  • Such stuff as dreams are made on

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
The last album with the current line-up, The King’s Singers present a new album of choral music from the early 20th century, with a feature from sopranos Grace Davidson and Victoria Meteyard. “Such stuff as dreams are made on is an exploration of European choral music from the early 20th century (and a bit either side), much of it shaped and scarred by the spectre of conflicts that dominated the continent in that period. For us, the album has been a chance to develop and exercise new and different colours in our singing, to dive deeply into text-centric interpretations and historical context, to savour and cherish the four languages in which we sing here, and – in one instance – even to expand our forces a little.” - The King’s Singers 4★★★★ - "This is a beautifully balanced programme without so much as a momentary lapse. Thank heavens for the King’s." - TheCritic.co.uk 5★★★★★ - “The overall impression is of a single organism, comfortable in its skin, moving and breathing as one” - BBC Music Magazine "Singing in small groups is the ultimate challenge, and few groups have mastered this so marvellously well as the King’s Singers. That this disc is a further feather in their already well-adorned caps, I am sure their many admirers will agree." - MusicWeb International "This release is both aesthetically and intellectually entirely successful and satisfying, performed by a vocal ensemble at the top of its game." - Musicweb International

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
“Santtu conducts Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10” is the fifth album from Philharmonia Records. Largely interpreted as depicting Stalin’s regime in Russia, the orchestra delivers tragedy, violence and gloom before the brief but triumphant finale. Conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali, this performance was recorded at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in April 2024. ★★★★★ - The Philharmonia Orchestra does Rouvalis' interpretation full justice, and several characteristic wind players make a very positive impression.” - Quarterly Classical "Themes from the previous movements are intriguingly revived and intertwined and the sheer energy of Rouvali’s onslaught upon the music almost convinces us of the heroism of resistance and endurance, ultimately rewarded by explosive, joyous liberation." - Ralph Moore - MusicWeb International "Santtu-Matias Rouvali vigilantly directs the varied dynamics, always on point and with emotion on the surface, with a language of rare clarity and undeniable warmth" - Sonograma "The first movement is both atmospheric and flowing, sensitively delineating each stage in the unfolding psychological drama." - Gramophone

  • All Will Be Well

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
This new collection of my choral music features recent commissions from choirs near and far. The overall theme of the album is one of hope but also concern for our relationship with living things and the planet we inhabit. Thus, in Earthificat I have based a new secular, environmental text on the words and structure of The Magnificat and in Renew Me In The Sunlight the words ask for strength to move forward in balance with nature. There is a movement, Reverence from my secular mass m=pV, a work about our stewardship of nature and our place within the universe and a setting of some beautiful words by the great ‘nature poet’ William Wordsworth. Alongside this are Christmas settings and other choral songs. The timbres weave between my more classical ‘a cappella and strings’ texture, towards a more jazz inflected sound world in tracks such as On This Night and Let All The People Praise You. I have worked many times with the inspirational Newcastle-based choir Voices of Hope who won BBC Choir of The Year in 2016 and who have continued to grow in vocal magic and audience since that time. It’s been a joy to work with them and their choir director Mark Edwards alongside my own ensemble and string players from The Alina Orchestra. "A welcome addition for fans of Todd's music"BBC Music Magazine

  • Lament & Liberation

    Price range: £8.00 through £14.00
The first album from the Choir of St John’s with their new music director - Christopher Gray. Leaning into the college’s well-established tradition of championing new music, at the heart of the programme are two triptychs: James MacMillan’s Cantos Sagrados, composed 35 years ago, and Joanna Marsh’s Echoes in Time, commissioned by the College in recent months. There is also a new choral work by Helena Paish and a new organ work by Martin Baker alongside existing works by Roxanna Panufnik and Dobrinka Tabakova. The commissioned works were conceived with the distinctive environment of St Johns’ Victorian chapel (designed by George Gilbert Scott and consecrated in May 1869), its organ and its fine, world-famous choir which has done service since its post-Restoration establishment in the 1670s. ★★★★★ - BBC Music Magazine “This is not just a five-star recording, but a five star summa cum laude” - Cathedral Music "Gray’s St John’s College choir sing it with a confidence and bite that’s compelling." - The Arts Desk "Ornate melodies rise in delicate highs, while deeper voices unfold rich and luminous harmonies, weaving a melodic and harmonic interplay that navigates between abundance and constant change." - Sonograma “The Choir of St John’s College tackle this demanding programme not just with great accomplishment but also with evident commitment.” - Music Web International
