Rebellion is a three movement concerto grosso with violin and cello soloists. The first and third movements are in ritornello form and the middle movement is a passacaglia. Rebellion is about conflict.
Joanna Borrett says: “I spent a year studying cello in the former Soviet Union, and perhaps that’s why I had Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s books in my head when I was composing this piece. But the conflict in the music could also be about the way life can be sometimes, even if you aren’t living under an authoritarian regime.”
