British Cellist Jamie Walton explores the unique atmosphere of Holy Trinity Church, Blythburgh to perform Britten’s Three Solo Suites for Cello. The Suites are the summation of the long-standing friendship between Britten and Rostropovich, with the passionate third in particular inspired by the Russian cellist’s rich and romantic performances of Bach’s unaccompanied suites.
Although technically hugely challenging at times, such is Walton’s complete immersion in the music’s shifting sands of emotion that one barely registers some fairly astonishing sleights of hand and bow along the way. Beautifully filmed and recorded, this is a release of superlative quality – International Record Review
Enormously atmospheric and, as with Walton’s playing, takes the viewer through a profoundly moving artistic process with minimum fuss, and maximum effect – Gramophone
